8. Day 4 - Wednesday

Sally still couldn't get used to waking up in such luxurious surroundings. Nor could she imagine she'd ever take for granted the stunning views from the bedroom window. She stared dreamily out over the river, elbows on the window sill, chin cupped in her hands, and tried to picture herself living here full time. Not with the Kingstons, obviously, but with her own family. She thought wistfully that, if they had Rafferty's and Elizabeth's kind of money, Jason would be able to give up work. They could spend all day enjoying the scenery, shopping, relaxing, having fun...

It hardly seemed fair that Elizabeth had all this and still seemed unhappy, while she and Jason worked so hard and had nothing to show for it. She sighed. No use thinking about what was fair. Life wasn't fair. She'd learned that a long time ago. Some people were born to have money, and some people, like her and Jason, were born to be permanently skint. She only hoped Summer and Billie would fare better in life.

Breakfast was already being prepared, and Sally sat at the table, feeling guilty and a little useless. Rafferty was exceptionally kind, but honestly, he did everything. She wished he'd let her sort her own breakfast out for once.

'No Beau or Frankie?'

Rafferty took a mug from a cupboard and dropped a teabag into it. 'Frankie's having breakfast with Wilf at his bungalow. Beau's eaten already. He's gone out to meet a few friends. You're off the hook as far as filming goes today. They're hiring a boat for the day and going sightseeing.'

'Sightseeing? Doesn't Beau live round here then?'

Rafferty shook his head. 'He's originally from London, but he's about to move to Devon. He's taking up a new position there.'

'Devon! Blimey. What does he do?' She was ashamed to realise she'd never even thought to ask before.

Rafferty put the milk back in the fridge. 'He's a dentist.'

'He never is!' Sally couldn't believe it.

'What's so strange about that?'

She considered the matter. 'I don't know. He just seems so nice, and ordinary, and kind.'

Rafferty laughed. 'And dentists aren't supposed to be?'

She shuddered. 'None I've met. Well, that's not true. My new dentist is lovely, but the ones I had when I was a kid — well, they scarred me for life. It's a funny job for a young bloke, isn't it? You don't expect someone like Beau to be a dentist.'

'It's an important job,' Rafferty assured her. 'He's had to study for five years to qualify. He's a dedicated young man. I'm extremely proud of him.' He sighed. 'I wish Ellis would be a bit more like him. What with Arlo nursing and Beau becoming a dentist, you'd think Ellis would want to do something useful, wouldn't you?'

'He's going to be a film director isn't he?' She noted the look of disbelief cross Rafferty's face. 'Well, isn't he?'

'He says he is,' Rafferty said slowly. 'I wouldn't put money on it. I've heard Ellis's big ideas before and they never come to anything.
